I'm a FONERO!

FON-1.jpgHaving the iPhone has made me rely more on wifi and the brought home the realisation of the dearth of it over here in the UK. So I was intrigued to see an announcement detailing an agreement between BT and FON to expand the use of free wifi spots throughout the UK. I needed to expand my wi-fi coverage at home and as I've got plenty of available download bandwidth available I've gone and ordered a FON router. FON SHOP.jpgAs far as I can make out, it's a 2 port wireless router that you hook up to your network. It has two wifi networks - a private one for you and a public one for other FON users (FON restricts shared bandwidth to 512MB on the public network). Then any other FON user within range can use my public network for free. The nice thing is of course that I can use any other FON access points throughout the globe as well! We'll see how it along comes together once I get the router but it's a neat idea!

The iPhone is built on Leopard?

Erm yes, I thought that was a given? Why all the sudden hullabaloo Notes on the iPhone is unsyncable because it needs Leopard. The swishy animations on the iPhone are obviously built on the as yet unreleased Core Animation, part of Leopard. There is no iPhone SDK yet because to release it before Leopard would give away some of Leopards secrets. I thought everyone knew this?

Blushing at the Airport!

Sitting outside the gate at Ontario International Airport waiting for my first flight to Atlanta. Bought a t-Mobile day pass for $9.99 so I can check my mail and send a few tweets. Seeing as I had my notebook out, I thought I'd catch up on some podcasts and tuned into Allisons Nosillacast podcast to see what she was saying about me! I can feel my face going red as I listen! Thanks so much for the comments on the presentation Allison, I sweated long and hard putting it together and it caused me a lot of anxiety delivering to an audience of my peers. The fact that it has been so well received was extremely rewarding and makes all the hard work worthwhile. If you want to hear what she says, check out her nosillacast podcast. I really suggest you listen to it all as she gives a great review of the whole Expo experience, my 15 minutes of fame is around the 15 minute mark. As an aside, I travelled from the Hotel to the Airport with P.W.Fenton and Andy Mc from Slashdot. Andy had been recommended to check out my session and had bought the video that appeared on sale at the Expo. How cool is that! Gotta go, just about to board. Thanks again Allison.

Apple TV: A Hobby?

Blackfriars_ Marketing_ Apple TV_ just a preview of coming upgrade attractions.jpg

You know, I've always been a little perplexed by Steve Jobs reference to the Apple TV being classed as "a Hobby" with Apple. It didn't just sit right with me and I felt it was a classic case of misdirection by Jobs. Carl Howe over at Blackfriars' Marketing Blog has done a great post mentioning the three pieces of the Apple TV puzzle that are not yet in place but when they are, will generate revenue of more than $1.8 billion in 2009. There's no real new information in there but the previously rumoured bittorrent support to allow for peer to peer support in Leopard for the distribution of movie files makes another appearance. We are literally within weeks of Leopards launch and I have to wonder what hidden delights of Leopard still need to be made public. I'm sure that additional integration with the Apple TV and most definitely the iPhone are certainly on the cards. We'll soon find out!
