Microsoft Hits Snooze at Google's "Wake-Up Call"

"One thing is pretty clear: A decade ago, Microsoft was willing to do whatever it took to take down Netscape, including the ill-advised bundling of its Web browser into Windows, despite internal protestations about the technical and moral problems with such an approach. Stung by the innumerable antitrust battles that followed, today's Microsoft seems unwilling to change as dramatically. And its current complementary approach, from what I can see, has failed. Put simply, Microsoft may indeed have gotten a wake-up call, but it's been punching the Snooze button ever since."

Apple TV Delays - What's the Problem?

Sob! Yes, I got my email advising me that the release of the Apple TV has been pushed back a few weeks. Mine isn't now due until 28th March. I wonder what the delay really is? Is it manufacturing the hardware? - can't see it myself. These babies are probably all stacked up in a warehouse somewhere. iTunes Store? - probably not. The Apple TV doesn't directly interface with the iTunes store. Availability of European content? - Could they hold it back until we have some content to play on it over here in Europe - Wishful thinking! Nah, they wouldn't hold back the US release as well. iTunes? - Most probably. They need to release an updated version of iTunes to communicate with the Apple TV. It could be that they are finalising the release. Leopard - Possibly? Are there some design clues or other elements surrounding Leopard that they don't want to let out of the bag just yet? Leopard Secret Stuff? And what about the fabled Leopard Secret Stuff as mentioned in the WWDC keynote last year? Again, could this release be part of the unveiling of some of the secret stuff which either isn't quite ready or needs to be orchestrated as part of a bigger announcement? Only time will tell! PS At least my Apple TV leads have been dispatched

Camino 1.1b Released

camino.png

My favourite browser - Camino - has just been released as beta 1.1. I can't quite put my finger on why I prefer Camino over Safari, it just "feels" better and much faster. The new 1.1 beta released has a new version of the rendering engine and seems even faster! I hesitated before installing it in case it impacted on the use of the indispensible 1Passwd tool (how did I ever get by without 1Passwd!) but I'm pleased to say it's working fine. You just need to add the 1Passwd icon back onto the toolbar. What is really great though is the improved Tab support! My RSS aggregator is Google Reader which uses some easy keyboard shortcuts for navigation. Pressing "V" on a post takes you to the original article in a new window. In the earlier version, this would actually be a new window but in 1.1B it opens in a tab. Excellent! Give Camino a spin, I'm sure you'll like it.

The iPhone Advert

No mention of function, no mention of usability, just perfectly themed iconic images matching perfectly the theme of the advert placement. Just setting up the iPhone as another iconic device that will change the way we look at the phone. Hello? Perfect!

Clues to the new Leopard UI?

Pasted Graphic 1.png

Erm, is it me or is this screenshot of the new Server Preferences widget in Leopard Server a bit special? Via Roughly Drafted With all this talk of Black being the new white, rumours of black iMacs and some of the recent Apple banners and ads featuring back so prominently, does this widget give any design clues to the new Leopard UI? Hmmm... By the way, check out the original article, some good stuff in there. I may even have to stump up for a copy of Leopard server when it comes out!
