WWDC Free Zone

"What will Apple announce at WWDC06? There will no doubt be some surprises, but here are some well known inevitabilities, some reasonable possibilities for new apps, new UI, and new hardware, and a few commonly repeated ideas that - sorry - have no chance,"

Daniel Eran writes for RoughlyDrafted.Eran compiles a very interesting list. To wht you appetite, here's his list of "no-way predictions," the commonly repeated ideas that have zero chance of happening:• Red Box WINE or Windows Virtualization Not going to happen.• Use of Linux Kernel Linux isn’t even in the running.• Microkernel Removal Nothing wrong with the kernel.• An Intel-Only Leopard It will be Universal.• The End of an open Darwin project The kernel not going to stay closed.• iPod based Phone It will be a phone, not a music player that can place calls.• Self-Destructing Rental Media Exploding media is lame.• Skins on anything are not going to happen.

MacDailyNews | Predictions for Apple’s WWDC 2006

Right that's it. Only 3 days to go and I'm declaring that this blog is now a WWDC predicition free zone.

I suggest we all take a collective deep breath and wait until after the keynote and stop hyping things up.

Remember the disappointment when Steve announced the Intel Mac Mini, the iPod BoomBox and the iPod Cases. That was after some pretty intense speculation about what was to be launched during that special media event.

Ok, so two of the products themselves where disappointing but no matter!

Don't expect everything that's been mooted especially in the consumer area. WWDC is a developers conference and will be focused on products that matter to developers. Steve will deliberately hold back on some consumer announcements until later in the year, I think especially once the Zune specs and availability is announced.

Watch out for the iPhone though, don't developers need to start developing for a mobile platform before it's released :-)

Mainstream Media Gets It Wrong Again!

Spotted an article in todays Daily mail about the rumours surrounding a new iPod that may be able to display ebooks. Cool! Until they finished it off with this quote.... ....Apple is under pressure from Microsoft, which is launching a rival device, the zune, in the autumn

The Daily Mail - UK Newspaper 3rd August 2006

Excuse Me! Last I heard Zune wasn't even going to ship with video support at launch.

iPods in Cars

iPod automobile interfaces such as cassette adaptors and FM transmitters have proven to be a popular option for new iPod owners, but their days may be numbered, if Harris Interactive's research is any indication: more than half (52 per cent) of consumers who own or use an iPod in their vehicle, and 14 per cent of all adult vehicle owners, said they're extremely or very likely to consider purchasing an interface for their vehicle.

FM transmitters and cassette adaptors are the least preferred. Instead, respondents want either an auxiliary jack, Bluetooth, FireWire or USB interface.

Macworld UK - Study: Two thirds of iPod owners use them in cars

Nope, I want a standard DIN size unit that has a front panel that lifts up and allows me to pop in my iPod into the unit. I want it to withdraw the iPod into the unit and close the front panel. I then want to be able to see the iPod info on the front panel and control it either from the front panel or ideally some sort of remote control on the steering wheel (or utilise the existing audio controls)

When the iPod is not docked I suppose I'll also need an MP3 dual layer DVD drive, an FM radio, a memory slot and a USB slot.

Not much to ask!

Duh!

Apple CEO Steve Jobs will deliver his Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote speech in San Francisco next Monday 7 August 2006, and analysts are beginning to place their bets.

American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu offered clients his predictions for what Apple's boss will reveal in a keynote Wu believes will be focused on the Mac. Wu expects Jobs to unveil Apple's new Power Mac-replacing Intel-powered Mac, likely to be called the Mac Pro. "We view this as important as many of its professional and high-end consumers have been waiting for a high-end expandable Intel Mac," he wrote.
