OmniPlan Screencasts

You may remember a month or two ago I did a special sponsored show which included OmniPlan by the OmniGroup.
To add to the existing OmniGraffle and OmniOutliner screencasts, they've now hosted the OmniPlan show as mini tutorials on their site.
Excellent!
Many thanks to Linda over at the OmniGroup for supporting ScreenCastsOnline in this way.
Keep watching and you may see another Omni group product on the show in the next few weeks.

Why The iPhone Seems Unfinished

Listening to TWIT today and Leo Laporte was bashing the iPhone again (but in the nicest way possible!). The lack of 3rd party apps and the as of yet unreleased SDK still seems to irk but understandably so. Most of the reasons why this is so and the explaination as to why Apple has handled this so badly is spelt out by Wil Shipley Two other items were brought up eluding to the feeling that the iPhone was "unfinished" and these were the lack of sync for the iPhone notes application and the absence of a to-do list. It's quite simple really, and I will personally guarantee Apple will be releasing these unfinished components in October 2007! They are both elements of the new Mail.app to be released in Leopard and Apple have gone on record and demonstrated them back in the 2006 WWDC keynote. Now remember that the iPhone and Leopard were both to be released in Spring 2007 but Leopard slipped back to October. Obviously, the integration between iPhone and Leopard is extremely tightly knitted and by moving Leopard back, Apple needed to de-couple some of the integration. I would imagine that the notes component proved too difficult to remove from the iPhone and conversely, the to-do functionality is too dependant on Mail in Leopard to have it as a standalone app on the iPhone. So we have a compromise and a seemingly unfinished iPhone. Not log to wait until October when notes and to-dos will become the full monty together with other Leopard integration we know nothing about! At least you guys over in the US can play with it in its "unfinished" form ;-(

More Wild Apple Speculation

Regular readers of my blog will no doubt be aware of the wild and wacky predictions I made during MacWorld 2007 - a day or so after the iPhone was announced.
You know, all about multi touch coming to the Mac.
Following the launch of the iPhone, various comments made once people have started to use the device in earnest have only re-inforced my opinion that this surely must be on the cards albeit possibly slightly modified.
I've heard a few people really liking the visceral nature of touching your data with your finger on the iPhone and wanting to touch the screen on their laptop in the same way.
The introduction of coverflow into the finder in Leopard is surely a sign that sweeping through your files with your finger on the mac is coming.
One comment that did make me re-consider this approach was from an ergonomic expert (lost the reference) wh indicated that multi touch on a vertical or near vertical screen is a no no due to the stresses and strains it will put on your arm.
OK, So multi touch needs to be on a horizontal surface on the mac. How does this sound....
On a MacBook or MacBook Pro, a separate large multitouch panel where the track pad currently lives. Perhaps twice the width and length of the current track pad. But make it a display as well, just like the iphone so you can customise the functionality of the trackpad.
On an iMac or Mac Pro, have a separate multitouch panel to replicate the multi touch features on the desktop.
Just pure speculation on my part but it's always good fun to second guess Apple :-)

Great iPhone Review

I've been keeping my head down since iDay as there's so much stuff out there on the internet, further contributions from someone who hasn't got one isn't really necessary!
My good friend, Joseph Nilo from the MacMediaCast has just posted a great review of the iphone with some footage of his experiences standing in line on iDay.
Well worth checking out!
In fact, the newly revised MacMediaCast podcast has some pretty cool stuff overall so I'd recommend subscribing if you're into using media on the Mac at any level! - Subscribe in iTunes
