YouTube and Apple TV - Part 4

Previous thoughts:

Part1 Part2 Part3

Well after a few days of checking software update every day (!) Apple have released the software update to Apple TV that enables direct access to YouTube. Some initial observations following my earlier posts:

Installation: Very easy! No real progress indicators for the download of the software update but on completion you're prompted to install now or later. Now of course! Several automatic reboots later, YouTube is now on my Apple TV main menu - sweet!

Implementation: Fits in seemlessly with the overall Apple TV experience - Nice job!

Quality: Most things I've had chance to watch have been fine on the HDTV - not HD quality of course but compared to the iPod resolution clips I've downloaded from YouTube they are brilliant!

Streaming: No issues what so ever!

Interaction: As I predicted, Apple have introduced the first truly interactive component of the Apple TV. You can use an onscreen keyboard to enter simple search queries for clips - opens up a world of possibilities. In addition, you can also login to your YouTube account via the Apple TV! I'm not sure what benefits this brings....

Just did a quick test!

Just saved a favourite video on the Apple TV and it's now showing in my favourites on the YouTube website. How cool is that!

Also, just discovered Apple TV supports multiple users for YouTube by storing your account information and allowing you to login as different users!

These are just my initial discoveries but there's bound to be a lot more being written about Apple TV and YouTube over the next week.

Oh and yes, Apple have also announced Youtube on the iPhone:

iphonetube

I wonder if they'll surprise us with video capture on the iPhone. Wouldn't it be neat if you could take a video with the iPhone and then just upload it there and then!

Exciting times!
